Wolf - Denali National Park and Preserve, Alaska, USA
Photographing wild animals is a pretty difficult task, first you have to find your subject, the right light, the right weather and then you’ve got to capture that striking pose. It’s usually a pretty tall order to capture that special image. In my opinion, all the elements came together in this image. In fact, it’s one of my favorites from this year. I saw this wolf in the same general location for several days but never got a chance at a decent shot. Finally, one afternoon I saw it hunting ground squirrels while moving in my direction. I set the camera and waited patiently. The wolf came closer but was always intent on catching squirrels never really looking up or stopping to pose. I was worried that I was not going to get the image…then it happened. A ground squirrel across the little valley let out a little alarm screech and the wolf stepped in the beautiful fall color and looked across the valley…I snapped as many images as possible during the short alert moment. Just as fast as it happened it was over and the wolf disappeared over the next ridge. Doing my homework and being in the right place for the right moment paid off and I got the shot.
